Short History of Chosun Black Belt Academy of TKD
Chosun Black Belt Academy was started in 2003 by Joe and Michelle Peterson, a husband and wife team that are both licensed Black Belt Instructors. Michelle has an extensive background not only in Tae Kwon Do, but also in gymnastics and aerobic kickboxing. Joe has been teaching the art of Tae Kwon Do for the past ten years throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. He was raised in Tae Kwon Do by a Korean Master, which is one of the reasons that the Chosun Academy adheres to so many Korean customs and traditions. He continued his training throughout college at Northern Illinois University, which is when he discovered his love for teaching. By the time he had finished college he was in charge of teaching a campus Tae Kwon Do club as well as a University-accredited Tae Kwon Do course. He strengthened his teaching background by finishing college with a teaching degree in secondary education and immediately began his apprenticeship for instructing Tae Kwon Do. He has a very strong competition background, competing in many local, State and National competitions. Since that time he has promoted to the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt and has been passing on his knowledge of Tae Kwon Do to students throughout the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin areas as a full-time, professional Instructor.??The "Chosun" name was selected as a symbolic representation of the emphasis on education and the family values that are stressed at the Academy, just as the Chosun era (1392-1910) of Korean history emphasized family values and the importance of education. In addition, the Chosun dynasty, which ended in 1910, was the last of the traditional eras of Korean history. At Chosun Academy, there is a strong emphasis on tradition and Korean culture, as this was the path that laid the foundation for Tae Kwon Do becoming so popular in the 20th century.
